In the United States, the combination of business and arts is much more connected through the philanthropic tradition that has most of the major arts organizations owing a good portion of their operation and ability to accomplish their missions through financial support of the business community – a tradition that has been part of the arts fabric in the United States dating back to the early nineteenth century. In China, where arts groups are now becoming more and more common – both traditional Chinese art forms as well as Western art forms, there is no such tradition or relationship between arts organizations and business. The concept of philanthropic giving is virtually non-existent or, at least, still very rare in China. Thus the relationships and connections being made in China between business and the arts are more pragmatic – with the stated goal of those interested in the arts being to serve as a means to improve the business, increase the standing of the those who own and run the business, and to increase their credibility and visibility in the community. The goal is the increased financial success of the business as well as the promotion of the art.
